COST: approx. $3.00
here's what you'll need...
- Fabric for inner bag - about 1/3 of a yard works - flannel or mid-wieght muslin is good
- Fabric for your cover - about 1/3 of a yard - any kind of cotton or flannel will work
- Filler - rice, corn, flax seed, barley, wheat, etc.
here's what you'll do with it all...
- Decide on the finished size you'd like your warmer to be - the ones we made were approx. 11 x 17.
- Cut your cover fabric approximately 1" wider and 3" longer than your desired finished measurement, this allows for your side-seam allowance, and a fold-down allowance so that the top of your cover looks finished.
- Cut your inner bag fabric about 1" smaller than your finished measurement - you want the inner bag to be a little smaller, and a little shorter, than your outer cover. Leaving a little wiggle room makes removing and replacing the inner bag easier.
- Sew the inner bag along each side. Leave the top open now
- Fill inner bag with about 3-5 cups of grain. You want the bag to be fairly pliable, without feeling empty. It's not an exact science - play with it a little and see what you like.
- Fold the top of the bag in about an inch or so, and sew to shut.
- Sew your slip cover along each seam
- Fold the top edge down into the cover, about 2" or so - you want it to extend past your inner bag slightly.
- Topstich around top of the slipcover to secure fold.
Heating instructions:
Time depends on your microwave and your filler grain. Start at 30-60 seconds and go from there. Please note: The bags can get very hot and the contents will burn if you heat them for too long.
